What does County Council do?

Established by the Home Rule Charter January 1, 2000, Allegheny County Council is the legislative branch of the county government, consisting of fifteen elected officials serving four-year terms. Thirteen members are elected by district and two elected county-wide.

Council controls Allegheny County's spending, taxation, and ordinances. Your representative legislates your day-to-day issues ranging from road and bridge improvements to property taxes, mine subsidence, county parks, and the county 911 services. Visit the Council Newsletter to learn more.

Powers and duties of the Council include:

  • Approving and amending legislation

  • Adopting balanced budgets each year

  • Permitting use of county property

  • Levying taxes and fees

  • Confirming or rejecting appointments for county agencies and authorities
